\u00c0 la fin du 19e si\u00e8cle et au d\u00e9but du si\u00e8cle dernier, le Schapendoes n\u00e9erlandais se rencontrait partout aux Pays-Bas o\u00f9 il y avait des bruy\u00e8res et des troupeaux de moutons. Les bergers l\u2019appr\u00e9ciaient pour son ardeur infatigable au travail et son intelligence.<\/p>\n

Le Schapendoes appartient au groupe disparate des chiens de troupeau \u00e0 poil long et face tr\u00e8s poilue et \u00e9bouriff\u00e9e. Il est apparent\u00e9 au Bearded-Collie, au Puli, au Nizinny, au Briard et au Bergamasque.<\/p>\n

Le cr\u00e9ateur de cette race est le cynophile P.M.C. Toepoel. Pendant la Seconde guerre mondiale, il a su faire na\u00eetre l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat pour cette race pratiquement disparue. Entre 1940 et 1945, on se borna \u00e0 faire de l\u2019\u00e9levage avec les quelques sujets existant encore dans le pays. D\u00e8s 1945, on commen\u00e7ait \u00e0 reconstruire s\u00e9rieusement la race.<\/p>\n

Le Club de race du Schapendoes n\u00e9erlandais a \u00e9t\u00e9 fond\u00e9 en 1947 et, en 1952, le Raad va Beheer acceptait provisoirement la race. Le standard a \u00e9t\u00e9 fix\u00e9 en 1954 et, d\u00e8s lors, les chiens sont inscrits dans un livre des origines. L\u2019acceptation d\u00e9finitive de la race a lieu en 1971 et, d\u00e8s ce jour, seuls les chiens inscrits sont admis \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9levage.<\/p>\n
